  8. we get in this column.

  12. States?"

  50.    My reply to this is based on my own perception and beliefs.  I feel
  51. that one of the sources of most of our problem is all aspects of life
  52. deal with communication.  Communication breakdowns and barriers cause
  53. many of the symptoms our society experiences.  Communication is more
  54. that speaking or hearing, it's listening and getting accurate meaning,
  55. it's seeing and understanding what we see, and it's feeling empathy not
  56. sympathy for the people around us.  Maybe the scene from the play "Our
  57. Town" by Thorton Wilder in which young Emily Webb, who died prematurely
  58. at the age of 26, is allowed to return to earth from heaven one day will
  59. illustrate what I mean.
  60.  
  61. To her mother and father this day is just another day in their life;
  62. but, to Emily it is the only day that she has.  Because of her new
  63. insights, Emily is distressed by her family's lack of genuine
  64. communication and by the distracted, matter-of-fact manner of her
  65. mother.  Finally in desperation she cries out:
  66.      "Oh Mama, just look at me one minute as though you really saw
  67.       me....Just for a moment now we're all together.....Let's look at
  68.       one another."
  69.  
  70. We live our live as if they are filled with tomorrows never ending.
  71. With all the hardships, and terrible things that are present
  72. for each of us to cope with daily, how much better would all our lives
  73. be if we would truly stop, "look" and "listen" to one another.

  110.         Stamp out the political correctness movement centering in
  111. Austin Tx and reaching out to the four corners of this country.  It is
  112. the most gross and over-popular forms of censorship I've seen in all my
  113. days and, besides all of that, it cuts out most of my normal speech.

  125. The single most important thing that we should do to improve the overall
  126. quality of life in the United States is to revitalize our educational
  127. system.  Without an educated, skilled population, we cannot hope to
  128. compete in the global economy.  We cannot hope to find solutions to the
  129. myriad problems facing society today, not to mention in the future.  We
  130. cannot hope to cure the diseases, ease the poverty, lengthen the lives
  131. of all Americans, and generally improve the quality of our lives if we
  132. do not take immediate steps to return our educational system to a level
  133. unequalled in the world.
  134.  
  135. If we do not do this, nothing else we attempt will be accomplished and
  136. nothing else we attempt will have any meaning.

  172. The single most important thing that could be done in America today to
  173. improve life would be tolerance. What I am trying to say is if everyone
  174. in America could learn at least the basic concept and apply that concept
  175. of tolerance to their lives it would help. Attitudes and concepts are
  176. the driving force behind the creative forces in our country, if it were
  177. possible to make all of those attitudes more tolerant, not only to their
  178. fellow man, but to our neighbors, our earth and our general universe,
  179. then I truly believe it would be possible for peace to exist. For better
  180. or worse, we are all different, no two people are exactly alike and
  181. those differences are what make us unique, interesting and
  182. unfortunately, sometimes hateful and deplorable. Tolerance is an answer
  183. if tempered with understanding. For example, I do not have to hate a
  184. person because he is African-American or Oriental or Amerindian, just
  185. because I am white. Nor do I have to hate any of the above if they are
  186. bigoted and prejudiced. I have to learn that they are different and
  187. there are reasons for that. No one is born to be anything other than the
  188. environment in which they are brought up in creates. My parents are
  189. prejudiced, but I am not and I believe it is because I grew up in a low
  190. income area with a number of different races, religions and
  191. socio-economic people. We went to school together, we learned, we fought
  192. and we grew, but I still saw them as people. I believe in tolerance. It
  193. won't solve world hunger, it won't stop wars, but it might help us move
  194. towards a better existence where growth of new ideas and better
  195. understanding might occur and where those things could help successive
  196. generations conquer the vices of the past.

  229. I think education should be foremost on the minds of everyone. With the 
  230. proper education for everyone there would not be many of the problems 
  231. of today.  I think everyone should be offered the same quality 
  232. education from before the current elementary school grade levels. If 
  233. children were started off properly, and motivated to do their best in 
  234. school, they would have a better chance to continue that motivation the 
  235. rest of their lives. The un-motivated children of the past 15-20 years 
  236. have become the parents of the next un-motivated generation. (The cycle 
  237. continues) We need to break the cycle before any more damage can be 
  238. done.

  241. We received several good answers this month, though not as many in
  242. quantity as we usually do. This question was a little tougher, I think,
  243. than the usual fare.
  244.  
  245. Now, I'll attempt to answer my own question: What is the single most
  246. important thing that could be done to improve life in the United States?
  247.  
  248. Promote understanding. To me, that's the key to everything. If we
  249. understand one another - truly know one anothere - there's nothing we
  250. can't do together. Know your neighbor. Talk to the man across the
  251. street. Familiarity can breed understanding, and we're all less likely
  252. to hurt those that we know and like. America could be all the greater
  253. place just for that. It's a chance we all need to take.
